Witnessing the Bengal Monitor’s Tail-Whipping Display in the Wild

The Bengal monitor

The Bengal monitor, a species of large lizard native to South Asia, is known for its fascinating tail-whipping behavior. When threatened or cornered, these monitors employ their powerful tails as defensive weapons. With lightning speed and precision, they whip their tails forcefully, creating a loud cracking sound as it strikes their target. This behavior is meant to startle and deter predators or intruders, as the whip-like tail can inflict painful lacerations. The Bengal monitor’s tail-whipping behavior showcases their agility and ability to defend themselves, making them a formidable reptile in their natural habitat.

Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalists came across this Bengal Monitor that was not very happy with their proximity and warned them with its tail-whipping threat display.
