Changeable Hawk Eagle Seizing a Leopard’s Kill in Corbett Tiger Reserve

Changeable Hawk Eagle feeding from a leopard’s killChangeable Hawk Eagle is a formidable hunter and actively preys upon mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. However, they are not averse to stealing from the kills of other predators. Leopards compete with tigers for food and territory. Tigers attack all leopards that they come across and often carry away their kills. In order to feed peacefully, leopards carry their kills up into trees where tigers cannot follow them. A leopard had killed a Spotted Deer and taken the kill up on a tree. While the leopard was away, this Changeable Hawk Eagle sneaked up to the kill to quickly claim its share. This rarely seen occurrence was recorded by Jim’s Jungle Retreat naturalist Pan Singh on a safari to Corbett Tiger Reserve.
