A Checkered Keelback hunting a frog at Jim’s Jungle Retreat

Checkered Keelback is a medium-sized non-venomous snake found in South Asia, Southern China and South-east Asia. It is aquatic in behaviour and can commonly be seen in the forested streams, rivers, ponds and similar waterbodies in Corbett Tiger Reserve. There is a good presence of Checkered Keelback in the waterholes of Jim’s Jungle Retreat. Its diet includes fish, amphibians, arthropods, occasionally rodents and amphibian eggs, and rarely birds and turtles.
Recently, a Checkered Keelback caught a frog at one of Jim’s Jungle Retreat waterholes. The frog, caught by its hind legs, inflated its body in an attempt to become larger than what the snake could swallow. However, the frog lost out the battle of survival after a long struggle and was swallowed by the snake.
